President Akufo-Addo has underscored the profound repercussions of the Ukraine conflict on African economies, standards of living, and inflation rates. He emphasized that the repercussions have extended far beyond the center of the war.
He explained that “We oppose colonialism and domination, but in this context, we view Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
He emphasized that Africa has inadvertently suffered as a result of the conflict, with disrupted supply chains causing chaos in the economies of the continent.
“The consequences of the invasion go far beyond the confines of Europe. Indeed in many ways, Africa has been the greatest victim,” he reiterated..
He made this statement during the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland.
The President elaborated on how these disturbances have resulted in elevated inflation and soaring food costs, profoundly impacting the quality of life throughout Africa.
“This has had a terrible impact on our economies, on living standards, on high inflation,” he said.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized the significance of Africa’s engagement in resolving the conflict, stating, “We have an interest in participating in efforts to find a solution to this conflict.”
He advocated for a solution grounded in all-encompassing, equitable, and enduring peace, in line with international law and the UN Charter.
Additionally, in his speech, President Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of involving key global powers such as Russia and China in the peace process to guarantee a conclusive resolution.
“If we’re ever going to arrive at a definitive settlement, their involvement is essential,” he stated.
