Seventeen thousand, seven hundred and seventy-four (17,774) new HIV infections were reported in the country in 2023, indicating a 14.8% decrease in HIV transmission over the past decade. Among the 12,480 individuals living with the infection who passed away in the same year, 11.2% were children. The regions of Bono, Greater Accra, and Eastern Region continue to exhibit the highest prevalence rates.
During the dissemination of the 2023 National and Sub-National HIV Estimates and Projections in Accra, Dr. Kyeremeh, the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, expressed concerns regarding the majority of infections being among economically active individuals aged 15 to 49. The estimation suggests that fifty individuals are infected daily, with over 218 thousand individuals unaware of their HIV status.
Presently, there are more than 152 thousand individuals receiving ART medication, comprising 36 thousand male adults, 109 thousand female adults, and 5 thousand children. Additionally, over 87 thousand individuals achieved viral suppression in 2023. The Commission and its collaborators are working towards achieving an HIV epidemic-free country by 2030.
