A Nigerian lady attempted and breaks the record of the longest crocheting marathon

A Nigerian woman, Chidinma Modupe Okafor, has been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records (GWR) as the latest titleholder for the longest crocheting marathon.

As stated in a GWR publication, Chidinma broke the previous record by engaging in an uninterrupted crocheting session to create a stunning white evening gown for an impressive duration of 72 hours (equivalent to three days).

This achievement exceeds the former record of 34 hours and 7 minutes, previously set by Alessandra Hayden of the United States in 2021. Chidinma, who has been honing her crocheting skills since childhood, has been dedicated to crafting dresses and accessories for her loved ones.

“I aim to showcase the artistry and perseverance involved in this craft and promote awareness about crocheting and its benefits,” she said.

Chidinma disclosed that she endured a demanding ordeal to successfully set the record. She maintained an uninterrupted crochet session throughout her entire attempt. Without delay, Chidinma promptly transitioned to the next ball of yarn upon completing the previous one.

Chidinma shared that she underwent rigorous preparation for the record-setting feat, encompassing extensive training and mental conditioning, to enhance her stamina and concentration for the arduous task.

Similar to other ‘longest marathon’ record pursuits, Chidinma was allotted a maximum of two hours of rest per day (equating to five minutes per hour of crocheting). It was only during these intervals that she could partake in eating, sleeping, using the restroom, or changing her clothes.

“My preparation for the record attempt involved rigorous training and mental conditioning. It also required physical endurance and strategizing to maintain a consistent pace while minimizing fatigue,” she explained.

“Additionally, logistics such as arranging for sufficient yarn with support staff were crucial for the uninterrupted progress of the attempt.”

Her initial goal for the record attempt was to crochet a wedding gown, but she grew weary over time and decided to transform it into an elegant dinner gown suitable for various occasions.”I couldn’t dedicate additional hours,”she explained.

Chidinma’s world record will join the ranks of Nigerian record breakers such as Hilda Baci’s renowned cook-a-thon, Helen Williams (longest and widest wig), Ewa Cole (longest marathon singing Christmas songs), Clara Chizoba Kronborg (longest interview marathon), and Tonye Solomon (most steps climbed on a ladder while balancing a football on the head).
