The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has authorized a 5.8% increase in electricity tariffs and a 5.1% rise in water tariffs, effective as of Monday, July 1, for residential consumption.
This adjustment, which is part of PURC’s second quarterly assessment for 2024, will be in effect from July 1 to September 30. As per PURC, residential electricity users will experience a surge of 5.84%, while lifeline consumers will face a 3.45% hike.
In May 2024, PURC attributed the tariff adjustment to various factors, including the devaluation of the cedi, inflation, fuel costs, and the electricity generation mix.
The Commission took into account the competitiveness of various industries and the overall quality of life of the Ghanaian population when conducting this evaluation.
Regarding water, Ghanaians can expect a 5.16% rise in rates across all customer categories during the specified period.
This adjustment reflects fluctuations in significant external variables such as the exchange rate between the US dollar and the Ghanaian Cedi, domestic inflation levels, the composition of electricity generation sources, and the expenses associated with fuel, particularly natural gas.
