Tracy Chapman is an American singer and songwriter who has an overwhelming presence wherever she goes. She is also known for her reserved nature.
Tracy was born on the 30th of March , 1962 in Cleveland Ohio, in the United States of America.She is best known for her Hit single “Fast Car”.
Despite being known for her Hit single “Fast Car” which was released in the year 1988 , she has several hits to her credit.
Tracy , after the divorce of her parents lived with her mother. She was however subjected to racial assault and abuse as it was rampant during her era.
Chapman finds solace in education and realizes that education is her only way out of poverty and abuse.
She strives for academic excellence which later earns her a scholarship to a private school at the age of 16.
The artist furthers her education at the Tufts University , where she studied Anthropology with an emphasis on West African Culture.
Her journey to stardom starts when she gets signed on Elektra Records by Bob Krasnow in the year 1987.
Following her signage , she released her debut album the next year titled “Tracy Chapman” which became a commercial sensational .
Fame finds her , as she skyrocketed to immense fame after her performance of her single “Fast Car” at Nelson Mandela’s 70th Birthday Tribute Concert held in London in the year 1988.
Her performance was a stroke of luck , as she was a last minute stand-in for Stevie Wonder who suffered technical challenges on the day of the performance.
Chapman in her career has won four Grammy awards , 6x platinum certified by the Recording Industry Association of America. She is also the only Black woman to have a solo writing credit on the No.1 country song.
