The Ghana Education Service has designated September 27th as the arrival day for first-year senior high students for the academic year 2024/25. The service has advised school administrations to make necessary preparations for the upcoming academic term.
According to a circular from the Ghana Education Service to regional directors of education, all other activities and programs scheduled for the semester will proceed as planned without any alterations.
This development comes a day after the conclusion of the 2024 BECE. The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination featured a vast number of candidates, exceeding 500,000, at 2,123 designated centers nationwide. It notably marked the first BECE conducted under the Common Core Curriculum.
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has not specified the timeline for the release of the 2024 BECE results, which are crucial for the subsequent placement of students in senior high schools.
The BECE was not devoid of heartwarming narratives, such as the account of a 71-year-old Ghanaian man in Goaso who partook in this significant examination. Kwesi Baiden, the elderly individual, captured the admiration of many on social media when a video emerged showing him seated in the classroom alongside other candidates, engaged in the exam.
People also commended 34 prison inmates for their participation in the 2024 BECE. Among them were 27 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre (SCC), five from Nsawam Maximum Security Prison, and two from Sunyani Central Prison.
It was reported that during the first day of the BECE examination, a candidate demonstrated remarkable resilience by writing with a pen held in his mouth. A video capturing this extraordinary act by the special needs student, widely shared by Adom News, sparked diverse reactions. The Ghana National Council of Private Schools, in their comments to YEN.com.gh, expressed strong disapproval of the situation, deeming it unacceptable.
