Mahama advocates for an independent OSP

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has issued a resolute plea for the government to guarantee the unimpeded operation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Addressing the media in Bolgatanga, Mr. Mahama voiced his concerns regarding alleged governmental interference in the OSP’s activities. He underscored the pivotal role of the OSP in scrutinizing and prosecuting corruption and other illicit undertakings. He emphasized that an independent OSP is indispensable for upholding the integrity of Ghana’s anti-corruption endeavors and ensuring that justice is dispensed impartially, devoid of any political sway.

The former president vowed his unwavering support for granting the OSP unrestricted operational freedom in his subsequent administration. He emphasized that an independent OSP is paramount in reinstating public confidence in the government’s capacity to combat corruption with efficacy.

According to Mr. Mahama, the nation will continue to lose its limited resources due to corrupt individuals if anti-corruption institutions are not granted the necessary autonomy to execute their duties effectively. He implored the current administration to uphold the independence of the OSP and refrain from any actions that could hinder its operations.

Mr. Mahama also urged the public to rally behind endeavors aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the OSP. He emphasized that a unified dedication to combating corruption is imperative for the advancement and prosperity of the country.

“To be able to deal with corruption, I think that we should take away political interference. We should leave the anti-corruption institutions to do their work. This government is fighting the OSP. Indeed they’ve made attempts to, they hounded the first one so much – Martin Amidu – that he had to resign.

“The OSP should be left to work and I make that commitment when I come into office, the special prosecutor would have a free hand to do any investigations he wants.”

“What we do is it’s easy when you come into office to investigate your predecessor government. They are your political opponents so investigating them and prosecuting them indeed you will enjoy doing it, but the real test of the fight against corruption is when it happens in your regime that you are able to investigate and deal with it,” he said.
