It was a night to forget for captain Kylian Mbappe and Paris Saint Germain as a series of missed chances heralded by a single goal by the big powerful Niklas Fullkrug whose carefully controlled ball from Nico Schlotterbeck lofted pass kissed his left foot to produce a thud goal even though it was shadowed by the noise of the Borussia Dortmund fans.
Dortmund perhaps were the underdogs of the competition but were in no way willing to let the cash dominate their traditional sense of integrity as Jadon Sancho dominated events down the right side of the pitch with the French striker kept quiet for the most of the game even though he managed to hit the right post.
Nuno Mendes and Dembele were the losers as the latter could not mark Sancho and as usual, the French man’s shot was always rising.
A match that should have ended in at least a four-goal margin for both teams.
The Parisians had their chances, though, and should have equalized on several occasions after the break. Mbappe and Achraf Hakimi both saw efforts ping off either post before Fabian Ruiz nodded wide with the goal gaping.
Next week might just be the final hour and reckoning moment for soon-to-depart captain Mbappe who has for some number of occasions vowed to bring the crown to Paris if he should be able to replicate the form against Barcelona where his silence eventually culminated in two goals then everyone will know that the French man has over the years mastered his approach to winning matches even when it is assumed he did not have his day.
