- The Accra-Airport Rotary Club has revealed the renovated adult wards for both men and women at the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics (Sickle Cell Clinic) in Korle-Bu, Accra.
During the unveiling ceremony, Rotarian President Peace Akwei-Brock expressed her pride in the club’s achievement. “I am particularly honored that we have accomplished what we set out to do at the commencement of this Rotary year,”she stated.
She emphasized the initiative’s dual significance: supporting the clinic and raising awareness about sickle cell anemia. “We are also pleased that we can assist in alleviating the suffering of individuals living with Sickle Cell,”she further added.
Akwei-Brock expressed her gratitude to various benefactors, which included:
Members of the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport (RCAA) and other Rotarians
Ghana Commercial Bank, WHO, SIC-Life, McAdam Design, Achimota Golf Club, and Friends for their financial contributions during the Charity Golf Tournament
Phyto-Riker (GIHOC) Pharmaceuticals for their donation of pharmaceutical products
Despite successfully reaching the GHc200,000 target for the project, she mentioned that there were still outstanding pledges and urged for their timely fulfillment to ensure the complete refurbishment.
She also extended her thanks to the members of her club, particularly PP Round and Rotarian Dr Amma Benneh-Akwasi Kuma, for their substantial involvement in the planning and execution of the project.
Originally, the project aimed to provide structural reinforcement to the wards, but due to exorbitant costs and regulatory obstacles, the plan had to be revised. The updated refurbishment plan comprised of:
Replacing ceilings with Plaster of Paris (POP)
Installing new window blinds, lighting fixtures, and ceiling fans.
Installing new window blinds, lights, and ceiling fans
Enhancing the hospital wards involved the provision of 10 deluxe recliner chairs, two high-definition televisions, doctor and nurse-specific tables, 10 bedside tables, wash basins accompanied by cabinets, and aesthetically pleasing paintings.
Akwei-Brock confidently guaranteed that further furnishings would be delivered by the month’s end and expressed optimism for ongoing support to the medical facility.
Dr. Amma Benneh-Akwasi Kuma, the esteemed Director of the Ghana Institute of Clinical Genetics, commended the renovation efforts, emphasizing their profound effect. She articulated, “Your contributions extend beyond monetary value, leaving a lasting impact. The benevolence shown is truly noteworthy.”
