Ghana is on the brink of a maritime milestone as the largest bulk carrier ever to dock at a West African port sets course for the Port of Takoradi. The MV CBS Years, boasting a carrying capacity of 300,000 deadweight tonnes, is scheduled to arrive on January 27, 2026, in what authorities describe as a transformative moment for the nation’s shipping and export landscape.
The historic call is being spearheaded by a collaboration between Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), Cosco Shipping Lines, and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA). Officials say it will significantly boost bulk export volumes, advancing Ghana’s revenue potential and strengthening its foothold as a maritime leader in the region.
Preparations for this unprecedented docking haven’t been left to chance. Teams from GPHA and GMC invested in advanced training, sending key marine operations staff to China to master the complex manoeuvres required for handling cape-size vessels like the CBS Years. Comprehensive standard operating procedures have been developed, and risk assessment efforts include real-time drone surveillance, underscoring Ghana’s heightened safety commitment.
Officials expect the inauguration ceremony to draw senior government representatives, international partners, and key industry stakeholders, celebrating not just the vessel’s arrival but Ghana’s growing infrastructural capacity and regional ambition.
