“…Ghanaians in UK to try and be indoors latest by 7pm…” Ghana’s High Commissioner to UK.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Papa Owusu Ankomah, has urged Ghanaian residents in the UK to remain indoors by 7 pm to evade involvement in the ongoing anti-immigrant demonstrations. In recent days, these protests have escalated in intensity, with certain participants engaging in violent acts, such as setting ablaze hotel establishments that accommodate asylum seekers.

Fortunately, Mr. Ankomah has reported that no Ghanaian nationals have been targeted thus far, and his office is actively evaluating the situation, prepared to issue travel advisories if Ghanaians are deemed to be at risk. The High Commissioner has advised Ghanaian expatriates in the UK to steer clear of areas where protests are taking place.

“Even as at this [Wednesday] morning, our officers are calling the leadership of Ghanaian community asking for an update and urging them to encourage Ghanaians in the UK to try and be indoors by latest 7pm. And also to avoid areas where these protests are envisioned to be held latest today,” he said.

Protests initially erupted towards the end of the previous month following a dissemination of false information inciting anti-immigrant campaign, in the wake of a tragic stabbing incident that resulted in the tragic loss of three children in Southport, located in northern England.

The Crown Prosecution Service of the United Kingdom announced on Tuesday that approximately 100 individuals have been formally charged in connection with the violent disturbances.
