In a move set to reshape transport and unlock economic potentials in the Volta Region, major road construction has officially begun in Ho West District under the government’s Big Push Project. The initiative, aimed at enhancing connectivity and stimulating growth in largely agrarian communities, has moved beyond planning into on-the-ground actions.
Work is underway to upgrade critical stretches, from Sokode through Abutia Kloe to Juapong, transforming dusty tracks into bitumen, surfaced roads. This upgrade will include proper drainage and culverts to improve durability and year-round usability.
Addressing residents at a coronation ceremony in Abutia Teti, Ho West District Chief Executive, Prosper Francis Dussey outlined the phased approach: “The contractor you see on the road will construct from Sokode to Abutia-Kloe. Another contractor will continue and end at Juapong.”
Local traditional leaders have also weighed in. The newly crowned Mankrado of Abutia, Togbe Keh Kosi VIII, called on the community to unite in support of the development. Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Togbe Abutia Kodzo Gidi V spoke about strengthening educational access and community safety as part of broader development efforts.
For many in Ho West, the project represents more than new roads, it’s a gateway to better market access, more vibrant trade and a long-awaited boost to local livelihoods.
