The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, promises to address the issue of plastic pollution in the country’s coastal areas by engaging the youth residing in fishing communities to undertake beach cleaning initiatives.
He has assured that these individuals will receive incentives to ensure the cleanliness of the beaches is maintained. He said during a brief meeting with canoe owners and fisherfolks in Tema on Saturday, June 8.
He pledged to the fishing communities that, should he be re-elected as president, his administration will revitalize the fishing industry to its former splendor. Mr. Mahama criticized the Akufo-Addo government for causing harm to the fishing sector. He noted that during the time of the NDC, the pricing of premix and outboard motors was overseen by the head fisherman, whereas now it is managed by members of the ruling party.
“We will restore the glory days of the fishing industry,” He declared.
He added “we have to provide vessels for the Navy to be able to patrol our waters.
“We will provide the Navy with ships so that they can patrol and make sure that the exclusive zone where the trawlers are not supposed to come, they don’t come there.
“We are going to employ young people who live in all the fishing communities along the beach and we will pay them to clean the beaches every day so that there will be no plastics on our beaches.”
