The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has kicked off a nationwide demonstration today, Tuesday, September 17, in response to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to allow a forensic or investigative audit of the voter’s register. The protest is currently unfolding along approved routes across all 16 regions of Ghana.
Announced by party chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah on September 16, 2024, the demonstration is fueled by concerns over alleged inconsistensies within the voter’s register. The NDC has voiced serious doubts about the register’s credibility, warning that its integrity could be at risk ahead of the December 7 elections.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the party’s Director of Elections, emphasized that the current register is “unfit for purpose” and called for either a forensic audit or a thorough parliamentary investigation to rectify what he termed “incurably defective” abnormalities. The NDC maintains the necessity of such an audit to uphold a fair and credible electoral process, addressing public concerns over the voter’s register’s accuracy..
The party’s flagbearer, John Mahama, reiterated the importance of a peaceful protest, urging participants to avoid violence. “This is a peaceful demonstration. It is not a violent demonstration. It is a peaceful demonstration. And so if you know you cannot be peaceful, don’t come. We want only the people of peace to join us,” he reiterated.
