NDC Submits Petition to Parliament Demanding Forensic Audit of Voter Register

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially lodged a petition with Parliament subsequent to their ‘Enough Is Enough’ protest on Tuesday; a move that signifies their unwavering commitment to democratic principles. The party’s General Secretary, Fifi Kwetey, took center stage during the submission, laying out the NDC’s core demands with clarity and conviction.

His fervent plea for a forensic audit of the voter register resonated deeply, as he underscored the fundamental principle that transparency is the bedrock of a credible electoral process. By calling on Parliament to employ its influence in ensuring compliance with these demands, Mr. Kwetey highlighted the role of lawmakers in insisting the transparency of the electoral system.

Furthermore, the NDC’s petition encompasses a set of requests aimed at checking the electoral process leading up to the crucial 2024 elections. These demands span from a bi-partisan investigation of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) actions to the detailed examination of the voters register through a forensic audit, and a prompt publication of the audit findings to the public.

The party’s insistence on a re-exhibition of the voter register, coupled with a five-day review, underscores their commitment to rectifying any inconsistencies in the voters register. Moreover, the call for an electoral timetable and a call for a high-level meeting involving regional stakeholders like ECOWAS and the African Union (AU) reflects the NDC’s serious stance in promoting accountability and transparency in the electoral process.

The acceptance of the petition by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin signifies a significant milestone in addressing the NDC’s grievances, underlining the dialogue and engagement in a vibrant democracy. “This is one of the several ways to enrich our democracy,” he said.

The ongoing protest by the NDC, sparked by the EC’s reluctance to authorize a forensic audit of the voter register, is a proof of the party’s unwavering commitment in upholding democratic norms and principles. As demonstrators go through the approved routes across all 16 regions of Ghana, their stance echoes that the pursuit of electoral integrity is a collective mission aimed at the prevention of unfair elections in the country.
