In an extraordinary development that could redefine the future of North Korea, its long time ruler Kim Jong Un appears to be setting the stage for an unprecedented dynastic transition: his young daughter is emerging as his chosen successor. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) told lawmakers on Thursday that Kim’s daughter, widely believed to be 13-year-old Kim Ju Ae has moved beyond mere grooming to what officials described as the “successor-designate stage.”
If this assessment is confirmed by Pyongyang, it would mark the first time a woman much less a teenager could ascend to the nation’s highest political mantle in the hermit kingdom’s history. The NIS said its conclusion is based on a “range of circumstances,” including her growing presence beside her father at high-profile state events and signs that her input may be sought on certain policy matters.
Kim Ju Ae’s public profile has steadily risen since her first known appearance in 2022 at a long-range missile test. Since then, she has appeared at military parades, factory inspections and even diplomatic moments including a notable visit to Beijing with her father last September.
NIS officials told lawmakers they will closely monitor whether Ju Ae appears at North Korea’s upcoming Workers’ Party Congress later this month, the country’s biggest political gathering and how she is positioned in state protocol. That event, which sets domestic and foreign priorities for the next five years, could provide the platform for a more formal announcement.
Despite her rising status, North Korea’s state media has never confirmed her name or age, referring only to her as a cherished child within the ruling Kim family.
