President Akufo-Addo has officially launched the Law House, a cutting-edge ten-storey building in Accra that will now serve as the new headquarters for the Attorney-General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice.
President Akufo-Addo reminisced about the commencement of the Law House project during his time as Attorney-General and expressed profound satisfaction in witnessing its fruition during his time as president.
“Today marks a moment of immense pride and achievement,” he declared. “This structure stands as a testament to our government’s unwavering dedication to addressing the longstanding office accommodation challenges encountered by the Attorney-General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice.”
President Akufo-Addo commended the commitment of the current Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, who assumed office in 2021 when the project was only thirty-six percent complete.
“His endeavors ensured that this endeavor, which could have easily devolved into yet another abandoned government undertaking, was executed into the magnificent edifice we celebrate today,” President Akufo-Addo remarked, conveying a heartfelt “ayekoo” to the Attorney-General.
Underscoring the rule of law as the bedrock of a flourishing democracy, the President in his speech stated, “The rule of law guarantees that no one is exempt from legal consequences, that the principle of equal treatment under the law is upheld, that justice is dispensed fairly and impartially, and that the rights and liberties of every citizen are safeguarded. This structure symbolizes the nation’s adherence to these principles and its aspiration for an equitable, liberated, and just society.”
The new establishment is anticipated to offer a conducive setting for the effective dispensation of justice, enhancing the operational capacity of the Attorney-General’s Office and the Ministry of Justice in serving the citizens of Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo also underscored the broader implications of this accomplishment as part of a larger strategy to modernize and digitize Ghana’s legal and judicial systems. The implementation of electronic filing systems, which reduces reliance on paper-based documentation and improves judicial procedures, marks a significant advancement in rendering justice more accessible and efficient.
This initiative empowers legal practitioners and litigants to submit documents online, access case particulars, and receive updates in real-time, thereby amplifying transparency and accountability within the legal framework.
In addition to enhancing judicial infrastructure, the Akufo-Addo administration has prioritized the welfare and security of judges. Since assuming office in 2017, the government has erected numerous courthouses and bungalows for judges nationwide.
By February 2024, seventy-nine new courthouses had been inaugurated, with twenty-one additional projects at varying stages of completion. These endeavors are aimed at tackling the persistent challenge of inadequate court infrastructure in Ghana.
President Akufo-Addo conveyed his appreciation to all those who contributed to the realization of the Law House project, expressing gratitude to successive Attorneys-General, architects, engineers, contractors, and laborers who brought the vision to fruition.
