To uphold peace, law, and order, Interior Minister Henry Quartey has pledged to implement stringent measures against individuals who provoke violence in anticipation of the upcoming December general elections.
During the inauguration of a Police store at the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Mr. Quartey declared that individuals who provoke violence on social media platforms concerning the elections will face legal action.
He elaborated that such legal actions will be conducted in accordance with the False Publication Act, which is designed to check the publication of inflammatory statements that have the potential to disrupt the electoral process.
“Very soon, anybody who makes a threatening statement to incite violence before, during, and after the elections, we will make sure the law deals with the person and a court of competent jurisdiction will work,” Mr Quartey asserted on Wednesday, July 17.
This initiative is a response to the escalating hate speeches prevalent on social media platforms. Mr. Quartey passionately advocated for a peaceful electoral process, urging the public to abstain from instigating violence to ensure that eligible voters can freely exercise their right to vote without intimidation. The Interior Minister also committed to fulfilling his duty of upholding peace and stability within the nation.
“I have been charged to ensure that the security agencies discharge their duties professionally to ensure peace, setting an example for neighbouring countries,” he added.
