A fierce backlash is sweeping through parts of the United States after rap superstar Nicki Minaj openly threw her weight behind President Donald Trump, a stance that has left many fans feeling betrayed and sparked dramatic protest actions online.
Over the weekend, clips went viral on TikTok showing people ripping up their Nicki Minaj concert tickets and posters in symbolic defiance of her political shift. In one video shared by influencer Oli London, a self-proclaimed liberal fan tears up her ticket while denouncing the singer’s support for the former president.
The controversy intensified when celebrity and LGBTQ+ activist Billy Porter weighed in during a red carpet interview at the MusiCares gala in Los Angeles. Porter didn’t mince words about Minaj’s political pivot, repeatedly saying: “F-k her. When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.” He doubled down on that sentiment, adding, “F-k her and all of them!” to underline his disgust.
Minaj’s outspoken politics have also drawn fiery criticism from other corners. Some Democrats have accused her of turning on her own community for personal advantage after she publicly dubbed herself Trump’s “number one fan” at a summit promoting federal child investment accounts.
Her vocal support for Trump which includes appearances at Republican events and praise for conservative policies has fractured her once-loyal fan base and provoked heated debate across social media, entertainment circles and political commentary alike.
