On the Thursday, Feb. 12 edition of ABC’s The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg made it abundantly clear she had hit her limit, not just with a topic but with the very idea of discussing it. What started as a Hot Topic about the Winter Olympics quickly turned into a reluctant comedy routine as Goldberg visibly tuned out a spirited debate among her panel colleagues.
The source of contention wasn’t politics or world news, but Norwegian biathlete Sturla Holm Lægreid, who went viral after winning a bronze medal and then confessing he had cheated on his girlfriend. In post-race interviews, Lægreid called his ex “the love of my life” and later apologized for overshadowing his teammate’s gold medal moment.
Goldberg introduced the segment and then quickly grew exasperated as co-hosts Joy Behar, Ana Navarro, Sunny Hostin, and Sara Haines waded into the details. As the conversation deepened into theories about love, biology, and relationship investment, Goldberg made her displeasure unmistakable. At one point she even attempted to leave the table, saying plainly, “I’m out,” to someone off camera as she stood up.
Her co-hosts gamely tried to keep her engaged, Ana Navarro pleading, “Stay with us, Whoopi. Stay with us,” and Behar finally offering a release with, “You’re excused from this conversation.” Goldberg happily accepted that pass, exclaimed “Please, yes!” and the show cut to a commercial break.
The moment underscored both the wildly viral nature of the Olympic scandal and Goldberg’s ongoing impatience with what she sees as fluff overshadowing heavier topics on daytime television.
